Carotid Ultrasound
What is a Carotid Ultrasound ?
A Carotid duplex is an ultrasound test that shows how well blood is flowing through the carotid arteries. The carotid arteries are located in the neck. They supply blood directly to the brain.
Why Do I Need a Carotid Ultrasound ?
Carotid artery disease is a major risk factor for stroke. The buildup of cholesterol plaques/blockages in your carotid arteries is the most common. If these plaques break off, they can travel to your brain and cause a stroke.
Other Risk Factors for a Stroke:
-
High blood pressure
-
Diabetes
-
High cholesterol
-
Family history of stroke or heart disease
-
Recent transient ischemic attack (TIA) or stroke
-
Abnormal sound in carotid arteries, detected by your doctor using a stethoscope
-
Coronary artery disease
This procedure is offered at our Dayton, Eaton and Springboro locations.
