What is a Renal Artery Ultrasound?

 

A Renal Artery Ultrasound is a non-invasive examination that uses sound waves to produce images of the blood flow in and out of your kidneys.

 

Why do I need a Renal Artery Ultrasound?

 

If you have high blood pressure that is uncontrolled, your physician may order this test to see if there is narrowing in the arteries providing blood flow to your kidneys from the aorta. High blood pressure damages the tiny blood vessels in the kidney.

 

How Do I Prepare?

 

You will need to fast for 8 hours before the examination, so no food or drink. Wear loose comfortable clothing for your examination. During the procedure you may be asked to change into a gown.

A Renal Ultrasound is a painless, non-invasive examination. In most cases, you will be positioned face up on the exam table. You may be asked to move, tilt or roll over throughout your examination to produce various angles for your images.

A gel is applied to the designated area, over which the sonographer will gently glide a probe. It may last up to an hour. Once the examination is complete, your physician will analyze the results and determine if further testing or treatment is required. This information will be reviewed with you and your loved one on the next scheduled visit.
